France regains global wine production top spot

France is back on top as the world’s leading wine producer – and surging demand for Bordeaux wines in China and Hong Kong is likely to keep it there until at least 2014.

A new study by International Wine and Spirit Research for the wine and spirits trade show Vinexpo shows France has regained the position it lost to Italy in 2009 by producing 419 million cases last year.

Global wine production has been declining since the 1960s, but the rate slowed last year and that trend is predicted to continue.
